Kurds in the hot seat, again!

by Matthew Isaacson

Much has happened in the Middle East lately concerning the Kurds. You would think that the Turkish supported flotilla against the Israeli blockade of Hamas run Gaza would demonstrate no bearing on the Kurds. You would be wrong.

Turkey has moved politically towards the worst radical anti western structures of the area, embracing support for Hamas, with Brazil providing Iran a fig leaf before the United Nations in its quest for nuclear weaponry, and demonizing Israel every chance it gets. Now it is enhancing security arrangements with Syria, a terror sponsoring state, to aid Syria in its own battle with separatist Kurds. It apparently sees this arrangement as helping with its own Kurdish PPK problem.

The arrangement has prompted Turkey to provide Syria with highly advanced Heron drones supplied by Israel when relations between them were far better. Under prior military arrangements it was expressly forbidden to transfer these weapons to hostile states and entities. The release of the Heron drones and their advanced technology to a terrorist sponsoring state is a first by a Nato member. This technology transfer provides a windfall of valuable intelligence concerning a powerful Israeli weapon not only to Syria, but to its close ally, Iran, and its Hezbollah proxy.

News out of the Middle East maintains that Syria is attacking its downtrodden Kurdish communities who may be aiding the PKK anti Turk forces with the help of this formidable UAV and using it for tracking the desperate efforts of the Kurdish communities as they flee the ruthless Syrian military machine. Apparently the Syrians are attacking with their usual disregard for civilian casualties. We will see how the Turks respond to their complicity in what is starting to be described as a massacre.
